Love, Growth and Spiritual Practices

The Escape Route

Life is coming at us at a fast pace, and sometimes life isn't kind. It seems very acceptable to adopt the persona of the victim these days. There are many situations where we can point the finger and blame someone or some external circumstance for our troubles and stress. It can actually become a part of our personality to find ways to put the burden on others for all our troubles, from a dead-end job, a failed friendship or bad relationship, to overeating to the point of morbid obesity.

Gossiping, holding grudges and spreading hurtful information about someone else is also an escape route that takes the blame and focus off us and puts it onto another person. It's a way where we don't have to take responsibility for our own shortcomings and insecurities. Eventually, badmouthing comes back to haunt us. Quality people don't have time to listen to those who make a career out of bashing others. It becomes an entry ticket to wallow in the mud and continue a life of misery.

It's a medically proven fact that hostility is a cause of heart attacks. We can live our lives that way, or make a decision to take responsibility to reach new levels with new opportunities for growth.

The Road Less Traveled

It is not easy to deal with adversity and the turmoil of life. It's much easier to run away from problems. It's easy to escape through some means of pleasure, deferring the challenges, pain and hard work that is necessary to get through tough times. But true personal growth only happens when we look squarely at adversity, explore the options, summon up true courage, and take the direction that will lead to excelling.

Over thirty years ago, a brilliant book called "The Road Less Traveled" was written by M. Scott Peck, M.D. What was written in that book applies more than ever today. I highly recommend it to anyone who is searching for answers as to why our lives aren't working. The front cover reads: "A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth." It was first published in 1978 and still holds the highest levels of spiritual insight and importance.

The Brilliant Gifts

The ancient sages knew and taught thousands of years ago what scientists are just now discovering. We live in a world that is not solid, as our senses have led us to believe. Our bodies and everything that we perceive as solid is actually nothing but energy and information, swirling at lightening speeds. What does all this mean? We are spiritual beings with access to the most incredible forces of energy. Our limited brains cannot comprehend the magnitude of power that is available. But all it takes is the desire to know.

The energy that is around us is the creative force of the universe, and it's gifts are just waiting to be received. Few people really know how to gain access to the abundance of gifts that are ours for the taking. Once we learn the ways to open up to the creative forces of the universe, we find that there are ways to overcome the most difficult situations. It just takes clarity of mind and an open heart.

Meditation is the way to clear up the clutter that blocks true creativity and problem solving. Meditation is not difficult once you have basic knowledge of the process. An important part of being able to meditate involves letting go of judgment of yourself and others. That, for some, is the most difficult part.

Random Acts of Kindness

One thing that can open the doors to changing bad situations is to start looking for ways to give. Giving is a random act of love and kindness. When we start to think in terms of helping, we no longer think solely of ourselves and our perceived problems. What happens is that the act of giving actually becomes a gift we give to ourselves, and only then do we experience true growth and fortune.

Inspirational Quotes:

You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give. -- Kahlil Gibran

Whatever you spend is gone. What you keep, someone else gets. What you give is yours forever. -- Dr. Wil Rose

There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life -- happiness, freedom, and peace of mind -- are always attained by giving them to someone else. -- Peyton Conway March

Want to Feel Wonderful? Try Guided Meditation

Guided meditation is a way to passively slip into a state of complete bliss and total heightened awareness. There are many forms of guided meditation. One is a written script that can be read to you by someone, or you can record it in your own voice and play it back while you lie down or sit with eyes closed in a chair. Try this free guided meditation script to start.

Here is an audio meditation from the Chopra Center. This is another great way to ease your way into a state of complete relaxation. Enjoy this Wanderlust Meditation.

THE GAYATRI MANTRA

The following section on the Gayatri Mantra is always in this newsletter so that you can enjoy the magnificent version by Deva Premal and Miten. Click on the link in the last paragraph to hear this beautiful mantra.

“Om bhur bhuvah svah
Tat savitur varenyam
Bhargo devasya dhimahi
Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat”

In India, one of the most sacred and oldest available Divine hymns is the Gayatri Mantra. In the ancient Vedic literature, this mantra is dedicated to the deity Lord Sun. In our life, the sun represents life-giving energy.

The Gayatri Mantra is considered to be the most important mantra written out in Gayatri meter. Gayatri is personified as a goddess, the consort of Brahma (Sarasvati), and mother of the Vedas.

The Gayatri Mantra should not be chanted for the purpose of material gain, physical or otherwise. This Mantra appeals to pure Consciousness to illumine our hearts and minds. It is a prayer to the Supreme Self to unveil itself and manifest as brilliant wisdom in our life. By repeating the Gayatri Mantra with the right understanding of its sacred meaning, the ordinary negative tendencies in the human mind can be erased to a large extent. This Mantra also is believed to alleviate many fears and will help with the start and successful outcome of any important work.

It begins with the letter AUM (OM). AUM being the sound symbol of Parmatman (Supreme Reality), it is considered to be the first vibration of sound emanating at the beginning of creation. Chanting the Gayatri Mantra is said to have healing, life-giving qualities and elevates the purest, highest consciousness in us; the inner center of our being around which matter functions with mathematical precision. Just as the entire solar system revolves around the sun, without Atman (the light that is our consciousness), bodily matter becomes inert and dead. Without the sun, life would have been impossible.

Learn and chant the Gayatri Mantra for true spiritual connection and blessings! This version of the Gayatri Mantra, is especially beautiful. Listen to it, learn it, and become mesmerized as you become immersed in the meditative sound of the Gayatri Mantra.
